TOG GUIDE

As summers get warmer, more parents are turning to the 0.5 tog for those long, hot months, and not just for holidays. Babies love routine and consistency, so if you’re travelling, keeping their familiar baby sleep bag as part of the bedtime routine can help them feel secure in new surroundings. Our 0.5 tog sleep bags are made from a single layer of crisp, woven cotton. This fabric is soft but sturdy, keeping its shape and resisting shrinkage, unlike more open fabrics like muslin. It also dries quickly, making it ideal for warm weather.

When the weather warms up, our 1.0 tog is the perfect lightweight choice. This tog is a favourite among parents who prefer bedding with no polyester content at all. Some parents even use the 1.0 tog year-round if their baby’s room stays above 20°C. We use the same organic knitted jersey for the outer fabric to keep things soft, safe, and cosy.

This is the most common tog rating for baby sleep bags, and it’s ideal for most of the year in the UK. A 2.5 tog baby sleep bag with appropriate clothing can keep your baby cosy on a chilly winter night or work just as well in the cooler months of spring and autumn. At Folk & Thread, our 2.5 tog sleep bags are crafted from an outer fabric, a filling, and a lining. We use organic knitted jersey for the outer fabric, which stays soft even after countless washes. The filling is polyester, which is reliable and consistent in maintaining tog levels, especially after many uses. While we’d love to use a fully sustainable fibre for the filling, we’re committed to safety and quality, and we haven’t yet found a fibre that provides consistent results over time.
HOW TO USE
A baby sleep bag can be used both day and night from birth, as long as your little one weighs at least 3.2kg (7lbs). Sleep bags aren’t suitable for babies with a low birthweight. At Folk & Thread, we make dressing your baby simple. We offer one thoughtfully designed style for newborns, and another for babies aged 3 months and up—each made with comfort, safety, and ease in mind. Both of our styles feature double shoulder poppers for added security. Over the years, we’ve found this to be the most preferred and easy-to-use neck opening. It’s also one of the most secure, with four fastening points instead of relying on just one zip at the crucial neck point—helping to keep your baby snug and safer.
For easy nappy changes and fuss-free dressing, we’ve designed both styles with a clever zip system. Our newborn sleep bag opens completely flat—making those early changes quick and simple. For our 3-month+ style, we’ve added a handy leg pocket to help tuck in wriggly legs, making dressing a whole lot easier. The zip also opens the top section fully, so getting your baby in and out is always smooth and straightforward.
Baby sleep bags are primarily designed for use in cots, cribs, Moses baskets, and lie-flat carrycots. Our 3-month+ sleep bag can also be used in a stroller. Always adjust your baby’s clothing to suit the room temperature and whether you're indoors or outdoors.
If you can no longer fit two fingers comfortably between your baby’s neck and the neckline of the sleep bag, it’s likely too small. Only move up to the next size once your baby has reached the recommended minimum weight for that size.
Baby sleep bags are primarily designed for use in a contained sleep space, such as a crib or cot. While some parents choose to continue using a sleep bag once their child moves to a junior bed, it's important to remember that babies should never walk while wearing a sleep bag, as this can lead to injury.
Always choose a baby sleep bag suitable for your baby’s weight, using age as a guide only. Folk & Thread’s 0-3m baby sleep bags suit babies weighing from 7lbs/3.2kg. Only move the baby into the next size when the baby is the correct weight. The weight determines the neck size, which prevents the baby from slipping down inside.
The armholes are designed to create ventilation around the baby’s chest to prevent overheating. The armhole poppers on the 0-3m and 3-18m sizes are there for those early few months of use for comfort. This extra set of poppers is not a safety feature, so don’t worry if your baby’s chest is too big for this added feature.
Our 3-18m size bag has length poppers so the bags can be made shorter, and a cosier fit for the first few months of use. Again, this is not a safety feature. Always ensure you fasten both poppers on each shoulder. When you can no longer fit two fingers comfortably between your baby’s neck and the fastened sleep bag, it’s time to move up to the next size - just make sure your baby’s weight is also within the required range.
.Our 3-month+ sleep bag is designed to be used with a 5-point harness in a stroller or pushchair. This means your baby can be easily transferred from cot to stroller—and back again—without needing to be disturbed. The harness feeds through an opening at the back of the sleep bag and out through the two-way front zip. This clever design allows the crotch strap to pass between the legs, while the shoulder straps fasten securely. Always ensure your baby is safely fitted into the harness before use. Never use this feature in a car seat, and remember to adjust your baby’s clothing when moving between indoor and outdoor environments.
TEMPERATURES & TOGS
TOG is a handy term we use to describe how warm our baby sleep bags are. “TOG” stands for Thermal Overall Grade and measures how well a product keeps the heat in. TOG helps make it easier for parents to choose the right baby sleep bag based on the room temperature. The maximum tog recommended for babies under 12 months is 4.0, but most baby sleep bags, including ours, don’t go beyond 3.5 tog. That’s because baby sleep bags provide warmth not just from the top, but from all around
The tog you choose depends on a few things, such as the room temperature, what your baby is wearing, and your baby’s individual needs. Just like us adults, every baby is different—some might need more or less bedding than others. You know your little one best, and you’ll quickly get to know their preferences. If your baby is feeling unwell, you may need to adjust their clothing or bedding. It’s always a good idea to check their temperature regularly. The best way to do this is by feeling the back of their neck or chest. If they feel sweaty or clammy, they’re probably too warm. It’s perfectly normal for a baby’s hands to feel a little cooler. As with most leading baby sleep bag brands, we offer three main tog ratings: 2.5 tog is recommended for room temperatures between 16-20°C and is the most popular choice in the UK, as it suits the majority of the year. 1.0 tog is perfect for room temperatures between 18-24°C, which makes it ideal for much of the year. 0.5 tog is our lightest option for room temperatures over 24°C—great for hot summer nights or holidays.
Folk & Thread follow the latest safety standards in the design of their baby sleep bags, which allows for a tolerance of ±0.5 when declaring a tog rating. The technical difference between a 0.5 tog and, for example, a 0.2 tog is minimal. In practice, simply adjusting the number of layers a baby wears achieves the same thermal effect. This flexibility allows parents and caregivers to use the sleep bag in a wider range of conditions
Room temperature is the most important factor when choosing the right tog for your baby. You can easily adjust what your baby wears underneath their sleep bag to help keep them comfortable—neither too hot nor too cold. Every baby is different, so it’s important to regularly check how they’re feeling. The best way to monitor your baby’s temperature is by feeling the back of their neck or chest, rather than their hands or feet. For most of the year, one tog option will be enough. However, during spring and autumn, when room temperatures can change overnight, it’s helpful to have either a lighter or warmer tog on hand. Our 1.0 tog sleep bag is designed to work across a wide range of temperatures when paired with the right layers—keeping things simple while making sure your baby stays just right, day or night.
The ideal room temperature for your baby is around 18°C (65°F). We recommend using a nursery thermometer to help you (or anyone caring for your baby) monitor the temperature in the room. It’s also essential to think about how your baby is dressed and the tog rating of their sleep bag. To make this easier, we provide an easy-to-use ‘What to Wear Guide’ with advice on the best sleep bag and clothing based on room temperature. It’s a good idea to screenshot it and save it on your phone.
Nope! Your Folk & Thread Baby Sleep Bag is all you need—just pair it with a fitted bottom sheet. Duvets, quilts, and pillows shouldn’t be used for babies under 1 year old, and we recommend keeping the cot free from any additional blankets.
As The Lullaby Trust says: “If you are using a baby sleeping bag, don’t add extra blankets on top. Add an extra layer of clothing or choose a higher TOG sleeping bag if you feel the sleeping bag isn’t enough.”
Your baby’s clothing should match the room temperature and the tog rating of the baby sleep bag. We’ve put together a handy what-to-wear guide, which you can access here. We also recommend using a room thermometer to help you monitor the room’s temperature, both during the day and at night.
In cooler months, babies usually wear a sleepsuit and vest with their 2.5 tog sleep bag at a room temperature of 16-20°C. However, even if it’s cold, it’s important to remember that The Lullaby Trust advises against using hats indoors, as this can lead to overheating.
In warmer weather or during a heatwave, it’s perfectly fine for your baby to wear just a nappy under their sleep bag. If your baby wakes up because they’re too cold, simply pick them up and adjust the room temperature or what they’re wearing. A quick cuddle in their Folk & Thread sleep bag will warm them up again before you pop them back, cosy in their cot. If your baby feels too warm, remove a layer of clothing and adjust the room’s temperature before returning them to their cot.
The best way to check is to gently slip your hand under your baby's clothes and feel the skin on their back or tummy. It’s perfectly normal for your baby’s hands to feel a little cool.
If your baby wakes up cold, pick them up, adjust the room temperature or their clothing, and give them a cuddle in their Folk & Thread Baby Sleep Bag to warm them up before putting them back in their cot. If they're too hot, remove a layer of clothing or adjust the room temperature, and settle them back in.
If you follow the guidelines in our what-to-wear guide, there should be no danger of your baby overheating. Decrease the level of clothing and bedding if your baby is unwell and has a raised temperature. If you are in any doubt, please consult a health professional.
Young babies are unable to regulate their body temperatures as older children and adults can. Hats worn indoors (and in cars) can therefore increase their risk of overheating.
The best way to check a baby’s temperature is by putting your hand on the back of their neck or on their chest (under their clothing). If the baby is too hot their skin will feel hot and slightly clammy or sweaty, and you will need to remove some clothing layers. It's perfectly normal for a baby's hands and feet to cool and this does not indicate their overall body temperature.

Nope! Your Folk & Thread baby sleep bag is all you need.
At Folk & Thread, we do not recommend swaddling beyond the first couple of weeks. This is because it can be difficult to predict exactly when a baby will start to roll over, and may increase a baby's core temperature through additional clothing layers and body heat of arms.
Instead, we support safer sleep practices that allow for greater freedom of movement—such as letting babies sleep with their arms free. In fact, many infants instinctively adopt a sleep position with their arms raised above their heads, often referred to as the “starfish” posture. This behaviour is closely tied to natural reflexes like the Moro reflex, which can cause babies to flail their arms in response to sudden stimuli. Over time, this reflex tends to evolve into a self-soothing position that offers comfort and mimics the secure feeling of the womb.
Our sleep bags have been thoughtfully designed by a designer with over 25 years of experience working closely with parents and babies—so they truly understand what little ones need. Each bag is cut with enough width across the hips to allow babies to rest in the natural “froggie” position, just like in the womb. As babies grow, they begin to stretch out during sleep, but they still need plenty of room to wriggle. Giving them space around the hips is also important in helping to prevent hip dysplasia and support healthy development
Folk & Thread baby sleep bags have 100% certified organic cotton outer and lining. This is suitable for sensitive skin as it sits close to the baby.
At the moment, we use polyester as our 2.5 tog filling because, despite our best efforts, we haven’t yet found a natural alternative that meets the strict safety and consistency standards required — especially when it comes to maintaining reliable tog ratings particularly. Filling materials like cotton and merino wool can vary too much in insulation particularly after washing as their structure can change , which affects the tog rating. This is something we take incredibly seriously.
If you’d prefer to avoid polyester, one option is to choose our 1.0 tog bag and layer your baby’s clothing to suit the room temperature. Our 1.0 tog is suitable for rooms as cool as 18°C, making it a flexible and safe choice for many families. We're always keeping an eye out for sustainable innovations and hope to find a safe, reliable alternative in the future!
It’s very common for parents and carers to worry that a baby might have cold arms while wearing a sleep bag. At Folk & Thread, we choose not to add sleeves to our baby sleep bags, as they can cause unnecessary insulation and increase the risk of overheating. Our sleeveless design allows for healthy airflow around your baby’s chest. When paired with the right layers underneath, your baby will stay comfortably warm without getting too hot.

TIPS & ADVICE
Baby sleep bags do not need to be washed every day unless there’s been an accident or sickness. We recommend every 2-3 days. You can tumble dry Folk & Thread baby sleep bags on a low heat and they quickly line dry too.
We suggest that you fold your product inside out before washing and close the zippers tucking inside the zip click cover. This will prevent damage in the washing machine.
Both styles of Folk & Thread baby sleep bags have been designed with an easy-to-use nappy opening so its not necessary to completely remove your baby from their bag.
Baby sleep bags, loose blankets and padded clothing should NEVER be used in a baby car seat as this compromises the car seat’s effectiveness in an accident situation.
It’s a great idea to have at least two baby sleep bags on hand—one for baby to wear and one as a backup. Accidents happen, and having a spare makes things much easier. Folk & Thread sleep bags are lightweight, and even our 2.5 tog styles dry quickly, so you’re never without a clean one for long.
Generally, its better to put baby sleep bag onto babies when they are awake, before bedtime so you don't need to disturb them if they drop off whilst feeding and cuddle time. We've designed both styles of bag so they are very easy and straightforward and they work in a similar way.
For the 0-3 months size, open the bag out flat and lay your newborn onto the back panel, fold the front panel across baby, connect the zipper at the underarm and pull zipper around the bottom. Finally secure both sets of shoulder poppers. For newborns and smaller babies you have the added underarm poppers. These aren’t a safety feature; they’re simply there to help your baby feel more secure and cosy. As baby grows, you will no longer need them.
For your 3-18 months and 18-36 months size bag, as your baby is more active and maybe a little wriggly at bedtime, we have a different style designed to make dressing as easy as possible. Again, lay the product flat with the front panel open. Some parents like to have the left hand set of poppers secured and slip the arm in, but its entirely what works for you! Fold the panel across the baby and connect the double head zipper at the underarm. Ensure the zipper is engaged. We recommend tucking the zipper heads under the zip guard at the underarm, (as baby is older and more curious). Finally ensure both sets of shoulder poppers are secured.
