The importance of temperature for babies
Keeping your baby at the right temperature is one of the most important ways to ensure safe sleep. Overheating can increase the risk of SIDS, and babies can get too warm because of too much bedding, too many clothes, or if the room is too warm. That’s why creating the perfect sleep environment, including the room temperature, is so important. It’s all about finding that balance. Babies should be cosy, but not too hot or too cold.
TEMPERATURE
What's the optimum room temperature?
The Lullaby Trust recommends keeping your baby’s room between 16-20°C—this may feel a bit cool to adults, but it's ideal for babies. What matters most is the temperature of the room where your baby sleeps, not the rest of the house. Babies who get too warm are at a higher risk of SIDS, so aiming for this range with light bedding or a well-fitting sleep bag helps ensure a safe sleep.
TOGS
What is a tog?
TOG is a handy term we use to describe how warm our baby sleep bags are. “TOG” stands for Thermal Overall Grade and measures how well a product keeps the heat in. Our co-founder, Ouvrielle, actually introduced tog ratings for baby sleep bags back in 2000 to make it easier for parents to choose the right baby sleep bag based on the room temperature. The maximum tog recommended for babies under 12 months is 4.0, but most baby sleep bags, including ours, don’t go beyond 3.5 tog. That’s because baby sleep bags provide warmth not just from the top, but from all around.
TOG GUIDE
Choosing the right tog
As the seasons change, so can the room’s temperature—dipping lower during winter and staying more consistent in the warmer months. This is where choosing the right tog makes all the difference, ensuring your little one stays just the right temperature through the night.
Tog rating
0.5 tog
Room temperature
24°C / 75.2°F
Thermal resistance
Lightweight fabric that retains less heat, keeping baby cooler in very warm rooms
Our folk say
As summers get warmer, more parents are turning to the 0.5 tog for those long, hot months, and not just for holidays. Babies love routine and consistency, so if you’re travelling, keeping their familiar baby sleep bag as part of the bedtime routine can help them feel secure in new surroundings. Our 0.5 tog sleep bags are made from a single layer of crisp, woven cotton. This fabric is soft but sturdy, keeping its shape and resisting shrinkage, unlike more open fabrics like muslin. It also dries quickly, making it ideal for warm weather.

A double-layer fabric that retains some heat to keep baby at a comfortable temperature
Our folk say
When the weather warms up, our 1.0 tog is the perfect lightweight choice. This tog is a favourite among parents who prefer bedding with no polyester content at all. Some parents even use the 1.0 tog year-round if their baby’s room stays above 20°C. We use the same organic knitted jersey for the outer fabric to keep things soft, safe, and cosy.

Thermal resistance
A double-layer fabric with filling that retains more heat to keep baby warm and cosy
Our folk say
This is the most common tog rating for baby sleep bags, and it’s ideal for most of the year in the UK. A 2.5 tog baby sleep bag with appropriate clothing can keep your baby cosy on a chilly winter night or work just as well in the cooler months of spring and autumn. At Folk & Thread, our 2.5 tog sleep bags are crafted from an outer fabric, a filling, and a lining. We use organic knitted jersey for the outer fabric, which stays soft even after countless washes. The filling is polyester, which is reliable and consistent in maintaining tog levels, especially after many uses. While we’d love to use a fully sustainable fibre for the filling, we’re committed to safety and quality, and we haven’t yet found a fibre that provides consistent results over time.

It’s worth noting that different fabrics feel warmer or cooler depending on how they’re made. So, a tightly woven fabric will feel warmer than a lighter, layered one. But any baby sleep bag meeting the European Safety Standard (BS EN 16781-2018) has been thoroughly tested, so you can feel confident in your choice.
