small bag. big impact.

At Folk & Thread, we believe every baby should sleep safely, no matter their family's circumstances. Last year, we donated over 1,200 items to The Lullaby Trust through our Better Sleep Project, but the need continues to grow. That’s why this year we’re partnering with Baby Basics UK, one of the country’s leading baby bank networks, to get baby sleep bags into the hands of families who need them most.

From one family to another

We’re collecting pre-loved baby sleep bags (any brand, any size up to 36 months) and giving them a second life. Each bag is carefully assessed by our in-house safety experts, using the same rigorous standards we apply to our own products. From neck openings and fastenings to seam strength and fabric condition, every detail is checked to help ensure it’s still safe for sleep. Once approved, the bag is bundled with safer sleep guidance and a room thermometer, then passed on to a family who needs it through the Baby Basics network.

TOG GUIDE

As summers get warmer, more parents are turning to the 0.5 tog for those long, hot months, and not just for holidays. Babies love routine and consistency, so if you’re travelling, keeping their familiar baby sleep bag as part of the bedtime routine can help them feel secure in new surroundings. Our 0.5 tog sleep bags are made from a single layer of crisp, woven cotton. This fabric is soft but sturdy, keeping its shape and resisting shrinkage, unlike more open fabrics like muslin. It also dries quickly, making it ideal for warm weather.

When the weather warms up, our 1.0 tog is the perfect lightweight choice. This tog is a favourite among parents who prefer bedding with no polyester content at all. Some parents even use the 1.0 tog year-round if their baby’s room stays above 20°C. We use the same organic knitted jersey for the outer fabric to keep things soft, safe, and cosy.

2.51.webp__PID:368953cf-2dd7-423b-bd2e-a954db0f7f7d

This is the most common tog rating for baby sleep bags, and it’s ideal for most of the year in the UK. A 2.5 tog baby sleep bag with appropriate clothing can keep your baby cosy on a chilly winter night or work just as well in the cooler months of spring and autumn. At Folk & Thread, our 2.5 tog sleep bags are crafted from an outer fabric, a filling, and a lining. We use organic knitted jersey for the outer fabric, which stays soft even after countless washes. The filling is polyester, which is reliable and consistent in maintaining tog levels, especially after many uses. While we’d love to use a fully sustainable fibre for the filling, we’re committed to safety and quality, and we haven’t yet found a fibre that provides consistent results over time.

Who are Baby Basics UK?

Baby Basics UK is one of the country’s largest baby bank networks, supporting families in need through a network of local centres. Working via referrals from health and social care professionals, they provide essential items, from nappies and clothing to bedding and pushchairs, to families facing poverty, housing insecurity, migration challenges, or domestic abuse.

In 2024 alone, Baby Basics supported over 44,000 children across the UK, and 1 in every 110 babies born received a Moses basket from one of their centres. We’re proud to work with Baby Basics on this initiative. While we offer expert safety checks for donated sleep bags, you can also donate directly to your local Baby Basics centre. Every act of support helps, and every good-quality item can make a real difference.

Fighting landfills with love

Every year, thousands of perfectly good baby items end up in landfills - including sleep bags - that could keep other little ones cosy and safe. By giving your baby's sleep bag a second life, you're helping reduce clothing waste and making sure something that still has value goes to someone who truly needs it. Together, we're making circularity simple and proving that better sleep and better sustainability can go hand in hand
