The magic of organic cotton in our sleep bags

by Lisa Joyce, Co-founder

At Folk & Thread, fabric isn’t just part of what we do — it’s in our name. But not just any fabric. We’ve poured our hearts into choosing sustainable materials that are gentle on the planet, and most importantly, perfect for your little one’s delicate skin. After 25 years of working with fabrics, we’ve learned what really matters: how materials behave, how they feel, and how they keep your baby cosy and safe. That’s why certified organic cotton is at the core of every baby sleep bag we make.

2.5 tog: Warmth without the worry

Our 2.5 tog sleep bags are designed for recommended room temperatures of 16–20°C, keeping your baby snug but not too warm. We use certified organic cotton both for the outer fabric and the lining, with a polyester wadded filling in between for just the right amount of insulation. The structure is carefully thought through: warm and breathable, never bulky or stifling. Plus, practical details like quick washing and drying make life a little easier for busy parents.

Organic fabric offers that extra layer of reassurance — free from pesticides and harsh chemicals, and loved for its natural softness. Many of you describe the feel as “buttery soft,” and we couldn’t agree more. It’s that gentle, cuddly texture that makes all the difference.

Durability is just as important to us. Our sleep bags are made to be handed down or donated, so we select stable fabrics that keep their shape over time. That includes ensuring the neck opening and fit stay true, wash after wash. And thanks to the quality of our certified organic cotton, you won’t have to worry about shrinking either.

1 tog: Light and lovely

For milder nights, our 1 tog sleep bags offer the perfect balance. There’s no wadding here — just a double layer of organic cotton for a lighter feel while still keeping your baby cosy in cooler months.

This design allows for that lovely airiness as temperatures rise, while keeping the same reliable softness and structure you’d expect from Folk & Thread. It’s always important to dress your baby appropriately alongside the tog rating and room temperature, but our 1 tog bags give you a flexible, easy-to-use option — soft, stable, and never too stretchy.

0.5 Tog: Cleverly cool

Our 0.5 tog sleep bags are where things get really technical. These are made specifically for warmer room temperatures of 24–27°C, when all your baby needs is the lightest layer to take the edge off.

Instead of muslin, we use a woven organic cotton fabric. Why? While muslin is soft, it tends to lose its shape over time. It shrinks and stretches with washing, which can affect key details like neck openings, armholes, and how the zipper lies. That’s not something we’re willing to compromise on.

Woven organic cotton offers the same lightweight feel but keeps its structure wash after wash, ensuring both comfort and safety every time your baby wears it.

Baby in crib

Kind to baby. Kind to the planet. Made to last.

Every sleep bag we create is designed with care, using the most sustainable, skin-friendly fabrics we can find. Because when it comes to your baby’s sleep, we believe in getting every thread just right.
