Spring sleep: choosing the right TOG for your baby

by Folk & Thread

Spring might mean cherry blossoms and lighter evenings, but when it comes to dressing your baby for sleep, the temperature outside isn’t the most important thing—it’s the temperature in the room that really matters.

As the days get warmer (and then colder again—thanks, UK spring), nursery temperatures can shift without warning. That’s why choosing the right tog for your baby’s sleep bag is all about what’s happening indoors.

What is a tog, anyway?

TOG stands for “Thermal Overall Grade” and it’s just a fancy way of measuring how warm a sleep bag is. Think of it like duvet ratings—but unlike your bedding, your baby can’t kick theirs off in the middle of the night. That’s what makes getting the tog right so important for both comfort and safety.

Why room temperature matters more than the weather

It’s easy to assume that warm spring days mean a warmer night ahead, but that’s not always the case. Room temperature can dip overnight, especially in older houses or if windows are left open. That’s why we always recommend checking the room temperature before bedtime, not just the weather app.

Every order includes a free room thermometer—so you can take the guesswork out of bedtime.

What tog should I choose?

Here’s a general guide to tog ratings based on room temperature:

0.5 tog:
Best for very warm rooms, typically over 24°C
1.0 tog: Great for in-between temperatures (around 18–24°C)
2.5 tog Ideal for cooler nights (16–20°C)

If your nursery temperature tends to change, it’s a good idea to have more than one TOG on hand, so you can switch things up as needed.

What should my baby wear under their sleep bag?

Layering under the sleep bag helps fine-tune your baby’s comfort. That’s where our What to Wear Guide comes in. It shows you exactly what your baby should wear underneath, depending on the room temperature and the TOG you’re using.

Making spring sleep simple

Spring is one of the loveliest times of the year—buds on the trees, longer days, fresh air and gentle light. It shouldn’t be the season of bedtime confusion. With the right tog, a little layering know-how, and your free room thermometer at the ready, you can keep your baby cosy and safe through all of spring’s ups and downs.

This season should be about blooming daffodils and blue skies —not worrying if your baby is too hot or too cold.
